About Anjelika Layco (Angel), Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist
My name is Angel. I earned a Master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from California State University of Fullerton, and was awarded a professional promise award at the graduation ceremony.
Over the past 16 years, I have been providing marriage counseling to couples who struggle with marital distress, communication problems, infidelity, and the history of trauma.
Prior to my counseling career, I worked as a Professor Assistant at St. Petersburg University in Russia, teaching World Literature and English Language.
After moving to the United States 28 years ago, I worked for several non-profit agencies. My experience includes providing counseling to children and families impacted by trauma and helping teens overcome drug and alcohol addiction.
I also volunteered for a domestic violence agency and served as a CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate), advocating for children's interests in court.
When I'm not counseling, I love spending time with my husband, our son, and our two little dogs. I also value solitude, as it allows me to recharge and reflect. Kindness, a sense of wonder, and being open to new adventures are my core personal values.

Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy
For centuries love, mysterious and puzzling in its nature, had been the exclusive domain of poets and songwriters. A 19th-century poet described the connection to a loved one as a safe haven: “Beside him I fear or dread none.” Love has been described as a source of joy and happiness as well as a source of misery and pain.
Not until a few decades ago has romantic love been demystified by psychologists and scientists. Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFT), described by Johnson as an empirically validated theory of adult love relationships, made love less mystifying.
Based on Bowlby’s attachment theory, Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy conceptualizes love as an attachment process. The attachment perspective on adult love suggests that secure bonds are built on interactions in which partners, who are perceived as attachment figures, are accessible and responsive to each other’s attachment needs.
The availability of an attachment figure, especially in times of stress and hardships, provides partners with safe haven for expressing their deepest emotions as well as providing and receiving comfort from each other.
Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFT) is one of the most effective approaches that successfully addresses marital distress, infidelity, and history of trauma in a relationship.
Research has shown that 70% of couples recover from marital distress, and 90% of couples experience improvement in the quality of their relationship with an EFT therapist.
The couples report that they continue maintaining positive progress two years after finishing marriage counselling.
The couples report having fewer conflicts, feeling more connected, and are communicating with each other in a more positive and effective way.
