Do you feel alone?
Are you longing for love and caring? Would you like to know the secret to a lifetime of love?
In his article “Lonely Planet: isolation increases in us,” Johannah Cornblatt states: “There are more than 300 million of us in the United States, and sometimes it seems like we’re all friends on Facebook. But the sad truth is that Americans are lonelier than ever.”
According to Harry Reis, professor of psychology at the University of Rochester, “some of the most profound loneliness can happen” not only when you are socially isolated, but also “when other people are present.”
Mother Teresa said that “loneliness and the feeling of being unwanted is the most terrible poverty” and “the only cure for loneliness, despair, and hopelessness is love.”
Why is it so important for people to love and feel loved?
Love has always been a mesmerizing topic for poets, songwriters, novelists and philosophers. A 19th-century Jewish poet describes emotional connection and a physical proximity to a loved one as a safe haven: “Besides him have I fear or dread of none.” Love is described as a source of joy and happiness and a source of misery and pain.
Is it possible to establish and maintain a loving relationship that brings heaven to earth?
For centuries love, mysterious and puzzling in its nature had been the exclusive domain of poets and songwriters. Not until a few decades ago adult love has been demystified by psychologists and scientists.
Dr. Sue Johnson in her article “What You Need to Know about Love,” explains “what love is about and how it works.” She wrote that “the need we have as children to be able to call to a special one and know that this person will respond with reassurance and comfort never goes away. To know that we are loved is the safe haven we all long for. The longing for this is wired into our brains from the cradle to the grave.”
